Interrupted Backgrounds #1

FOUR CHANNEL AUDIO, 06:59 MIN, SHELF, FANS, VARIABLE DIMENSIONS

The huge building where this project was carried out is fitted with a heating system based on warmed air distributed through the space by big fans. This process constitutes the main soundscape of the building itself. Based on a continuous stochastic sound, it generally becomes unnoticed background noise.

However, this background noise turns into foreground when the thermostat triggers the system off and on again. Recording and playing back the fan noises, at a different rate through different speakers located around the space, intensifies the background-foreground process. When both the reproductions and the real fans stop, there’s still a subtle noise that comes from two domestic fans, which at the same time, placed on a shelf, transmit a slight vibration to the metal rack.

Besides the disruption of reality through the distortion of the acoustic environment, this project conceives a common technical comfort structure through phenomena relative to the transcendental concept of pneuma.

This work was developed in November 2017 in Sandberg Instituut’s assembly hall, Amsterdam.
